Kirriemuir, Angus
Plate III — Heathland course — heather-framed, sandy subsoil
Heathland above Kirriemuir with views to the Grampians and Angus glens.
From the Notebook
Kirriemuir Golf Club occupies heathland on the hill above the Angus market town of Kirriemuir — birthplace of J.M. Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan here. The course was laid out in 1908 on ground that mixes heather, gorse and natural grassland, with views across the Vale of Strathmore to the south and the Grampian foothills rising immediately to the north.
Par 68, around 5,500 yards. The shorter par reflects the hillside terrain and the compact nature of the heathland ground available. What the course lacks in length it provides in character: the heather rough is genuine and punishing, the greens are firm and fast, and the elevated position gives the course a wind exposure that the card doesn't account for. The 5th and 12th are the most testing par 4s.
Green fee is £35–50 — good value for a maintained heathland in this setting. Kirriemuir is most naturally combined with a round at Glamis Golf Club (15 minutes south, parkland, less expensive) or as a day trip from the Angus coast before returning to Carnoustie or Montrose. The J.M. Barrie birthplace museum in the town centre takes an hour and is worth it for the personal artefacts and original manuscripts.

Outerwear
Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.
Layer
Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.
Tech
Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.
