Cheap Golf in Glasgow: Municipal Courses, Budget Clubs, and Hidden Value
Glasgow's municipal estate halved in 2020 when the council closed four courses. The two that survived, the new R&A community course at the old Lethamhill site, and a handful of welcoming private clubs — that's the cheap-golf picture in 2026.
Glasgow used to have more municipal golf than any other Scottish city. Then in February 2020 the council closed four courses — Lethamhill, Linn Park, Ruchill and Alexandra Park — leaving just two Glasgow Life venues running. The R&A took over the Lethamhill site and reopened it in 2023 as Golf It!, a community-and-family complex with a 9-hole course and a range. The cheap-golf picture in Glasgow is narrower than it was, but it isn't gone — and the surviving options, plus a few welcoming private clubs and the Ayrshire links half an hour down the A77, still make this a city where you can play a serious round of golf for less than dinner out.
This piece focuses on the cheap end. For the wider Glasgow-area picture across all price points — including the great parkland clubs and the day-trip links — see our 15 best courses within 45 minutes of Glasgow.
What Glasgow Life still runs
Two courses remain in the council estate, both bookable online or by phone with no membership required.
Littlehill Golf Course — from £16
Auchinairn, north Glasgow. 18 holes, par 70 — the only full-length council course left in the city, and the one to play if you want a proper round on Glasgow Life turf. Varied terrain, several holes that ask real questions, weekend mornings booked up a week in advance by regular fourballs. Weekday mornings are straightforward.
Knightswood Park Golf Course — from £8
Anniesland. A 9-hole short course on the edge of Knightswood Park. Perfect for an after-work hour, beginners, or juniors. Walk-up welcome most days; you can be round in under 90 minutes.

Golf It! — at the old Lethamhill site
The R&A's flagship community golf project, opened on the closed Lethamhill ground in 2023. A 9-hole grass course, a short course, a covered driving range, an indoor short-game area and a clubhouse aimed squarely at people who don't already play. Free or near-free to use the grass course at certain times; range fees are modest.
This is the new front door to Glasgow golf. If you've never picked up a club, start here. If you remembered Lethamhill fondly, this is what replaced it — different in intent, but on the same ground.
The budget private clubs
Cathkin Braes Golf Club — from £25
South side, Rutherglen, elevated above the city with views to the north. A private members' club founded in 1888, but visitor-friendly on weekdays at green fees most Edinburgh parklands can't match. 18 holes, par 71, moorland character — heather, firm turf, wind. Weekday visitor green fee around £25–£35.

Haggs Castle Golf Club — from £55
Pollokshields, south Glasgow. Tree-lined parkland in excellent condition, hosted the Glasgow Open on the European Tour. Visitors on weekdays, green fee around £55. The reputation exceeds the price — a round here compares well to anything under £100 in central Scotland.
Pollok Golf Club — from £75
Pollok Estate, southwest Glasgow. Mature parkland among old oaks and chestnuts, adjacent to Pollok Country Park. One of the best-presented courses in the city. Visitors on weekdays, around £75. More expensive than the others in this list but represents fair value for the quality and the setting.
Williamwood Golf Club — from £40
Netherlee, south Glasgow. A well-regarded south-side parkland, warmer welcome for visitors than some. Weekday green fee around £40. Suits players who want a proper round on a maintained course without paying the Pollok or Haggs premium.
The Ayrshire option (30–40 minutes south)
If you have a car and the inclination, the A77 south from Glasgow opens up some of the best links golf in the world. For budget players, the relevant options are:
West Kilbride (28 miles, 35 minutes) — proper Ayrshire links, green fee around £50–£70, visitor access on weekdays. The views across to Arran make it one of the most scenic golf courses in Scotland at this price point.
Irvine Golf Club (26 miles, 35 minutes) — flat, fast links, green fee around £35–£50. The Bogside Course at Irvine is one of the most accessible serious links tests in Ayrshire.
Dundonald Links (30 miles, 40 minutes) — modern resort links, full visitor access, green fee £70–£120. More expensive than the others but fully bookable with no visitor restrictions.
For the serious budget player prepared to travel, see our full Ayrshire golf guide — the Open rota venues are there too, but this article is about the affordable end.
Tips for getting the most out of Glasgow golf
Cathkin Braes is the budget pick if you want a proper test. Littlehill is solid council-course value, but Cathkin Braes at £25 visitor weekdays is a significantly better round.
Twilight rates at Littlehill drop the price further. After 4 pm in summer, green fees come down. In June and July there's playable light until nearly 10 pm in the north of the city.
Weekday mornings are best at private clubs. Saturday and Sunday tee sheets at the south-side clubs fill up a week in advance with regular fourballs. Tuesday to Thursday, you can usually get a slot with 24–48 hours' notice.
Glasgow has decent public-transport links to the surviving courses. Knightswood Park is walkable from Anniesland station; Littlehill is reachable by bus from Buchanan Bus Station; Golf It! is on multiple routes from the city centre.
The bottom line
The Glasgow muni estate is a fraction of what it was a decade ago, and that's worth being honest about. What's left — Littlehill at £16, Knightswood Park at £8, the new Golf It! complex — still represents the cheapest route into golf in any Scottish city. Add Cathkin Braes for £25, the south-side private clubs for £40–£75, and the Ayrshire links 30 minutes south, and Glasgow is still a place where someone on any budget can play a real round.
