The verdict

Which should you play?

Gullane No. 1 is the championship course: the one that climbs the hill for the famous view over the Forth from the 7th, has hosted Scottish Open final qualifying, and is pure, exposed, classic East Lothian links priced accordingly. Gullane No. 2 shares the same turf and much of the same terrain lower down, at well under half the fee.

For a single visit with a bit of budget, No. 1 is the one to play — the elevation, the views and the pedigree justify it. But No. 2 is no consolation prize: it's a proper links a serious golfer would happily play twice, and a group watching the pennies loses very little by choosing it. Play both in a day if you can — few clubs let you sample two genuine links on the same walk up.

Green fees are the clubs' published 2026 visitor rates, shown as a range from the cheapest to the dearest tee time. They change; always confirm on the course profile before you book. We don't take a cut of your green fee — the verdict above is ours, not the pro shop's.
