Buckpool Golf Club

Buckpool has one of the more moving origin stories in Scottish golf: the course was built in 1933 as unemployment relief work when Buckie's herring fishing industry collapsed, on land assembled from three adjoining farms, to a design by J.H. Taylor — five times Open champion and a third of the Great Triumvirate. The club still sits in the twenty-strong J.H. Taylor Community Group, whose members offer each other reduced fees, and made the NCG Top 100s of Scotland in 2026.

The golf is gorse-lined links above the Moray Firth, around 6,200 yards at par 70, relatively flat underfoot with a seat at every tee — and the greens are the calling card. The club's own line is that they are often praised as the best in the north east, full of swales and hollows, quick enough to embarrass; the fifteenth throws in the property's widescreen view over the firth.

Visitor life is simple: £50 a round any day of the week, £35 after 4pm, booked through BRS. Buckie is an honest fishing town rather than a resort, and its two clubs — Buckpool up the hill, Strathlene along the shore — make a fine, unglamorous 36-hole day for a fraction of what the famous Moray names now charge.
