Private links course used as Open Championship qualifying. Glasgow Golf Club's Ayrshire home.

From the Notebook

Glasgow Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in the world (founded 1787), and its playing home is the Gailes Links on the Ayrshire coast — a links course that was established at Gailes when the original Glasgow course became too congested with urban growth. The club now plays at Gailes exclusively, though its name retains the city connection.

The course is a serious links in the old Ayrshire tradition: tight fairways, firm fescue ground, a layout that runs along the coast in an out-and-back formation with the Firth of Clyde visible from several points. It has been used as Open Championship Final Qualifying, which is the reliable indicator of both condition and difficulty. The 5th and 12th are the holes that stay with visitors.

Visitor access is restricted to specific weekday visitor days; contact the club directly. Handicap certificate required. Green fee is £75–100. Caddies are not generally available but the course is readable enough to manage without one. The Gailes setting — railway-accessible from Glasgow, 40 minutes south on the A78 — is efficient for day trips, and the neighbouring Western Gailes and Dundonald Links complete a strong Irvine coast circuit.

Plan This Round

Three things to sort before you tee off.

Played here? Consider

Three things worth packing.

Course-tuned recommendations, not generic gear lists.

Outerwear

Galvin Green Andres jacket

Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.

Layer

Sunderland of Scotland half-zip

Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.

Tech

Garmin Approach S70 GPS

Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.

Frequently Asked

Visitors usually want to know.

Can visitors play at weekends?
Visitors are welcome but mid-week is markedly easier and quieter. Confirm a weekend tee time as far ahead as you can — popular Saturdays book up first.
How early can I book a tee time?
Phone or email the pro shop to confirm. Most Scottish clubs accept visitor bookings 7–30 days ahead; group bookings of 8+ can be arranged further ahead.
Is there a dress code?
Smart casual, collared shirts. Soft only.
Are buggies allowed?
Buggies are not generally available — the course is walked. Hire a trolley at the pro shop if you'd rather not carry.
What's the best time of year to play?
May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep for full conditions. Late May and early Sep are quietest with fair value. Year-round, best Apr–Oct.
