Parkland on East Road, a mile off the A77 and third of the three Prestwick clubs. Designed in 1963 by J.R. Stutt; hosted the 2017 Scottish Amateur Championship.
Prestwick has three golf clubs and this is the one nobody writes about. Prestwick Golf Club held the first Open in 1860 and prices accordingly; St Nicholas has the shore road and the sea views. St Cuthbert is inland on East Road, a mile off the A77, and it is a 1963 J.R. Stutt parkland course rather than a links — which is exactly why it is worth knowing about when the wind is up on the coast.
The card is 6,379 yards off the white tees, par 71, with a course rating of 71.70 and a slope of 132 — a course that rates a shade above its par, so it is not the soft option the price suggests. There are two par 5s on the front nine and two on the back, and the stroke index puts the hardest hole at the 4th, a 461-yard par 4. The yellow tees take it to 5,993 and par 70. The club hosted the 2017 Scottish Amateur Championship, which is the most concrete thing anyone can say about the quality of the ground.
Visitor pricing is the argument. A weekday round is £65 and a weekend one £80, but the two rates that matter are the flat £40 for anything after 3pm Sunday to Friday, and the flat £40 for a winter round between October and March when the mats go down. On a summer evening in Ayrshire that is three hours of parkland golf at a municipal price, fifteen minutes from Royal Troon. Prestwick Town station is about a kilometre and a half away, and the club puts Glasgow Central at 45 minutes by train.
