Its speciality is the thing next door: the Scott Gourlay club-fitting studio, one of the more respected fitting operations in the country, sits right at the academy. The honest positioning: if your problem might be the clubs rather than the swing — wrong lie angles, shafts you inherited, a driver from 2009 — Swanston is where a lesson and a fitting conversation happen in the same building. Melville Golf Centre — the Midlothian option

Out at Lasswade on the A7, Melville runs a range and lessons with a nine-hole pay-and-play course attached — a genuinely useful combination for a beginner, because the graduation from bay to golf course happens on one site with no member in a blazer watching. The concentration that makes the Braids great also makes it busy — the popular coaches' evening slots and the capped classes fill, so book rather than turn up hopeful. A lesson without practice between lessons is money spent on being told the same thing twice; budget bucket money alongside tuition money.
