The verdict
Which should you play?
Rosemount is the name that made Blairgowrie: Old Tom Morris laid it out in 1889 and James Braid reshaped it in 1934 into the course it still is — par 72 heathland cut through pine, birch and heather, with the corridors of trees framing nearly every hole. It is the more beautiful of the two and the one most visitors book without asking.
Lansdowne is a Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas design from 1979 on the same estate, and it is longer and more severe. That is the club's own description and it is the right one — Lansdowne asks for more off the tee and gives back less around the greens, and on a Perthshire summer afternoon it is a bigger day's work.
For a single round, Rosemount is the pick nine times out of ten: it is the better golf course and the one with the history. Lansdowne earns its place as the second round of a two-day stay, and the club sells combination tickets for exactly that. A strong player who finds Rosemount's tree-lined corridors too gentle will prefer Lansdowne, and that is a real preference rather than a compromise.
