Heathland above Greenock with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Argyll hills.

From the Notebook

Greenock Golf Club sits on the elevated ground above Greenock — the former shipbuilding town on the south bank of the Clyde — with views across the Firth to the Cowal Peninsula and the distant Argyll hills. Founded 1890, the course occupies heathland and moorland on the hill directly behind the town, at a height where the Firth panorama is present on almost every hole.

Par 68, around 5,800 yards. The exposed hillside position means wind is a constant factor; the heathland rough punishes errors with less mercy than a parkland equivalent. The 6th, played from a tee with the full Clyde panorama spread below, is the view that draws visitors. The 14th and 15th are the most demanding playing holes.

Visitor green fee is £35–50. For golfers on the south bank of the Clyde — in Greenock, Port Glasgow, or passing through on the A8 — Greenock Golf Club provides a proper heathland round with views well above what the price suggests. The course is accessible by train (Greenock Central, 30 minutes from Glasgow Central) and the hillside location is a 20-minute walk from the station.

Plan This Round

Three things to sort before you tee off.

Played here? Consider

Three things worth packing.

Course-tuned recommendations, not generic gear lists.

Outerwear

Galvin Green Andres jacket

Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.

Layer

Sunderland of Scotland half-zip

Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.

Tech

Garmin Approach S70 GPS

Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.
