Green Fees 2026
£20–£50 for a visitor round at Millport Golf Club. Checked against the club's published rates on 14 September 2026.
James Braid heathland on the high ground of Great Cumbrae, ten minutes by ferry from Largs. Founded 1888 as The Cumbrae Golf Club; Braid was invited to lay out the course in 1913.
Millport is the island course you can reach on a train and a ten-minute ferry from Largs, and it is a proper James Braid layout rather than a holiday nine. The club was founded in 1888 as The Cumbrae Golf Club — it changed its name to avoid being confused with Comrie in Perthshire — and invited Braid to lay out the course "to suit the modern game" in 1913. What he left is heathland across the top of Great Cumbrae with several blind shots, out of bounds in play through the opening seven holes and hazards on both sides of the second.
The card is just short of 6,000 yards, par 68 with an SSS of 69 — a course that plays a shot harder than its par, which is the Braid signature on a short site. It is high enough to give views across the Clyde in every direction and exposed enough that the wind decides the day.
Visitor pricing is among the plainest in Scotland: £20 midweek in winter rising to £50 at a summer weekend, with weekend, weekly and fortnightly tickets for anyone staying on the island. Tee times are released for booking two weeks ahead through the club website or the SGU app, and the visitors page says nothing about buggies or club hire, so bring your own.

Outerwear
Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.
Layer
Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.
Tech
Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.
