West Kilbride Golf Club

Not to be confused with East Kilbride — different club, different coast, different game entirely. West Kilbride Golf Club sits at Seamill on the Ayrshire coast, a championship links laid on a narrow strip of ground between farmland and the beach, with the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran filling the view. The club dates the idea to a November 1892 meeting in the local Temperance Hotel; Old Tom Morris came from St Andrews to survey the ground and declared it ideal for golf, the first nine opened in May 1893, and the course reached its full eighteen by 1905.

The card runs to 6,523 yards off the Arran tees at par 71, and the club's own scorecard carries the honest warning in the slope figure: 128, with out of bounds influencing play on twelve of the eighteen holes. This is generally flat ground — the challenge is the wind off the Clyde and the boundaries, not the climbing. The hole names tell you where you are: Goatfell, Tarbet, Lang Wham, Hunger em Oot. The championship pedigree is real and recent — the R&A Seniors Home Internationals came here in 2023, the Scottish Boys' Open Championship in 2025 and the Scottish PGA Championship in 2026.

The history runs deeper on the women's side than most Scottish clubs can claim: Jean McCulloch won the Scottish Ladies' Championship in 1913 while still in her teens, the first of three national titles, and the club fostered a strong Ladies' Section from the beginning. Visitor access is weekdays plus weekend afternoons after 3pm, booked in advance, and the club runs caddies at £60 a round plus gratuity — worth it first time out, because the boundaries punish the optimistic line. A round here costs a fraction of the Open-rota Ayrshire names further down the coast, and the views beat most of them.
