Base yourself in Melrose
Melrose is the prettiest base in the Borders — a Tweed-valley town with good small hotels and self-catering, the abbey, and a short hop to all four courses (none more than half an hour away). The whole region is budget-friendly on beds as well as green fees, so a group can do this trip properly for well under £150 a head all-in. Edinburgh is an hour north up the A68 if part of the group is flying in.
