Golf Driving Ranges in Glasgow: Where to Practise in the City

Glasgow is quietly one of the best cities in Britain to practise golf in, which is a strange thing to say about a place that closed half its municipal courses in 2020. But that's the story: while the council estate shrank, the range scene went the other way. The R&A built one of the most advanced practice facilities in the country on the site of a closed muni, the south side got a fifty-bay academy, and even the smaller ranges now carry ball-tracking technology that ten years ago lived only in tour vans.

This guide covers the proper ranges — the ones where you can turn up, hit a bucket under cover, and see your numbers. Every fact below was checked against the operator's own published information on the date shown in each box; where an operator doesn't publish something (a bay count, a price), we leave it out rather than guess. First, a thirty-second tech explainer

Nearly every range here advertises either Toptracer or Trackman. Both trace your ball and put the numbers on a screen — carry distance, ball speed, curve — and both turn a bucket of balls into something closer to a game, with virtual courses and closest-to-the-pin contests. The honest difference for a range user: you'll have a better session at whichever one is nearer your house. If you're a data obsessive doing serious gapping work, Trackman's radar heritage carries a little more prestige; for everyone else the technologies are close enough that bays, comfort and floodlights matter more.

Golf It! — the R&A's double-decker

The headline act. When the R&A took over the closed Lethamhill course by Hogganfield Loch, it built the kind of facility Scottish golf had never really had: a two-storey range where every bay is heated, the whole thing is floodlit, and the technology is standard rather than a premium add-on. It's booked by the bay rather than the bucket, which suits groups — three of you can share a bay, split the cost and take the mickey out of each other's numbers all evening. It's also the most genuinely welcoming range in the city for people who've never held a club: free club hire, and accessibility provision (including Paragolfer standing-wheelchair equipment) that shames venues twice its age.

Mearns Castle Golf Academy — the south side's practice HQ

If you live south of the river, this is probably your range: a fifty-bay Toptracer facility in Newton Mearns with a PGA coaching academy attached and a nine-hole course that can be played with eighteen-hole teeing options when you want to take the range work onto grass. The academy setup is the point here — this is where a lot of south-side golf gets learned, and the pathway from first lesson to first round all happens on one site. Clydeway Golf — the Trackman one

Out at Uddingston, off Blantyre Farm Road, Clydeway runs a covered, floodlit range with Trackman in every bay — the only range on this list carrying it on the Glasgow side. It's a practiser's range in the best sense: six target greens to actually aim at, left- and right-handed bays, decent range balls, and weekday-morning ball deals that reward the retired and the flexible. If your practice is purposeful — gapping wedges, grooving a fade — rather than social, this is the pick.

Fairways and Greens — the M80 stop-off

A twelve-bay Toptracer range just off the M80 on the city's north-east shoulder, and the natural stop for anyone commuting that corridor. It's the smallest facility here and makes no pretence otherwise — but the buckets start cheap, the technology is the same as the big places, and there are lessons and custom fitting on site. The range equivalent of a good local: modest, handy, does the job.

Strathclyde Park Family Golf Centre — the Hamilton option

Technically Hamilton rather than Glasgow, but ten minutes down the M74 and worth knowing about: a covered Toptracer range attached to a proper family golf centre, with PGA lessons, custom fitting, a cafe, and a loyalty card for high-volume practisers. Which one suits you

• Never played before, or bringing kids? Golf It!, without hesitation — free club hire, heated bays, and nobody there will look at you sideways for topping one along the mat.
• South side? Mearns Castle, and take a lesson while you're at it.
• Serious about your numbers? Clydeway's Trackman bays and target greens.
• North-east or on the M80 daily? Fairways and Greens.
• Lanarkshire? Strathclyde Park.

The honest caveats

Mats aren't grass. A winter of range work off mats will groove your swing and quietly flatter your strike — the mat forgives the heavy contact that a Scottish fairway in April will not. Mix in short-game work where you can, and treat the tracked carry distances as your true numbers (they're measured, unlike the ones we all remember from that one downwind par five).
