Two courses (Fidra and Dirleton) on a private estate near Gullane.

From the Notebook

Archerfield has two courses — the Fidra Links and the Dirleton Links — on a private coastal estate between Gullane and North Berwick. The Fidra Links is the one with the sea-facing holes; the Dirleton plays more inland through the estate woodland. DJ Russell designed both on land that had been part of the Archerfield House estate for centuries, working with dune and coastal terrain to produce a layout that feels older than its 2004 opening date. The Fidra island — a small rocky outcrop in the Firth of Forth, visible from the 4th and 5th fairways — is said to have been Robert Louis Stevenson's inspiration for Treasure Island. Whether this is literally true is a matter of some debate.

On the Fidra Links, the seaward holes play with the Firth of Forth as a constant presence on one side and the estate dune ridges on the other. The 4th and 5th face directly onto the water with Fidra island in the frame; the 8th, a par 4 played back through a dune corridor, is tighter than its yardage suggests. On the Dirleton Links, the character shifts: more woodland, more enclosed, the elevation changes more pronounced and the sea views intermittent rather than constant. The two courses are best played in sequence — Fidra first, Dirleton after — with the variety between them making a 36-hole day here less repetitive than most.

Access is managed through Archerfield House, the estate hotel. Non-members can book via the estate's golf reservations team; the courses are not open to walk-in visitors. The green fee of £135–£185 covers the Fidra Links. The combination of the two layouts, the estate hotel, and the proximity to Gullane and North Berwick makes Archerfield a destination rather than a detour — the kind of place golf trips are built around rather than fitted into.

Visitor access works best when planned as part of a stay or at least a full day on the estate. The practice facilities are tour-specification; the clubhouse is the converted estate building. From Edinburgh, 35 minutes east on the A198. Pair with North Berwick West Links (10 minutes north) for two contrasting links experiences on the same day — Archerfield's manicured estate links in the morning, North Berwick's raw coastal loops in the afternoon.

One Hole Worth Talking About

The hole everyone remembers.

Walled Garden

Russell's signature hole on the Fidra. The course opens up from the trees here — the green is surrounded by huge waste bunkers front and back, with a pot bunker almost carved into the surface. The strategic question is whether to lay back to a longer second or take on the bunker complex from a shorter approach.

Plan This Round

Three things to sort before you tee off.

Played here? Consider

Three things worth packing.

Picked for links rounds on the Scottish coast.

Outerwear

Galvin Green Andres jacket

Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.

Layer

Sunderland of Scotland half-zip

Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.

Tech

Garmin Approach S70 GPS

Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.

Frequently Asked

Visitors usually want to know.

Can visitors play Archerfield Fidra Links?
Limited visitor access. Archerfield is a private members' club; non-members play through reciprocal-club arrangements, hotel-package programmes (the Archerfield House and Old Clubhouse hotels are partners), or as guests of members. Direct visitor tee times are not bookable.
What is the green fee at Archerfield?
There is no published visitor green fee — access is exclusively via the routes above. Resort packages typically work out at £200-£350 per round when bundled with on-property accommodation. Members and accompanying guests pay an internal rate.
Are there two courses at Archerfield?
Yes. Archerfield Fidra Links (DJ Russell, 2006) and Archerfield Dirleton Links (Russell, 2009) are both on the same estate. Members and package guests can play either; the Fidra is the more visually striking with its coastal holes; the Dirleton is the more strategic.
How does Archerfield compare to Renaissance Club?
Different propositions, similar access challenges. Both are East Lothian member-only clubs with comparable hotel-package arrangements. Renaissance is the Genesis Scottish Open venue and the more famous of the two; Archerfield is less tournament-focused but has two courses to Renaissance's one. Visitors with limited access are likely to find Archerfield easier to secure through hotel partnerships.
Where do I stay at Archerfield?
Archerfield House (the original 18th-century mansion on the estate, now a luxury hotel) and the Old Clubhouse Hotel in Gullane village are the on-estate / on-doorstep options. Rooms from around £350 per night peak season. Both packages typically include guest tee-time access.
Is the Archerfield estate the same as Archerfield Fidra Links?
The estate hosts the golf courses, the historic Archerfield House (built c.1745), and Archerfield Walled Garden (opened 2014, a separate visitor attraction). The DJ Russell courses opened from 2006 onwards on the estate's coastal land. The estate has had golf in some form since the early 20th century.
