Elderslie Golf Club

Elderslie Golf Club plays golf on the lands of Wallace — the village is the traditional birthplace of William Wallace, and the club leans into it, with hole names like Wallace Craig and Volunteer reading like a local history lesson. The course itself is a James Braid parkland first opened for play in April 1909, framed by Newton Woods, and the club is right about one thing few can claim: the view of the first and last holes from the car park genuinely sets the tone, with the 439-yard closing hole running back towards the clubhouse.

At 6,175 yards and par 70 it is a fair examination rather than a bruising one, but the club's own advice is worth heeding — the second cuts and defined aprons help you judge the shot, and straying from the fairway or missing the green gets punished. The reward for the climbing comes at the top of the course: Ben Lomond and the Kilpatrick Hills from the seventh and ninth greens, the Gleniffer Braes behind the tenth tee, and a panorama over Glasgow towards the Campsies from the twelfth and thirteenth. The 547-yard fourteenth, Little Newton, is the card-wrecker in waiting, and the stroke-index-one seventh earns its number.

Visitors are genuinely welcome midweek at £40 a round, with weekends at £50 by prior appointment — and visiting parties get looked after properly, with per-head discounts for bigger groups and catering packages that run from an arrival roll to a full two-course spread. Buggies and trolleys can be hired, a WHS handicap is preferred, and the practice ground by the first tee plus the club's indoor golf lounge with Flightscope technology cover the warm-up whatever the weather. Fifteen minutes from Glasgow Airport, it's a smarter first-day round than most of the obvious choices.
