Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club

Old Course Ranfurly is the older of Bridge of Weir's two clubs — don't confuse it with Ranfurly Castle across the village — and the course has been supplying the same test over three separate centuries. Originally laid out in 1889 by Willie Campbell and altered in 1920 by James Braid, it is a classic Scottish moorland course carved into natural growth and heath, with the views doing overtime: Ben Lomond and the Campsie Fells fill the horizon on the good days.

Par 70 at 6,061 yards off the whites, SSS 70, and the club's own description is the accurate one — a shade over 6,000 yards where you constantly use every ounce of skill and luck in your possession, navigating the quirks of a course that was routed before the Haskell ball. Moorland golf is its own discipline: the ground is honest but the stances aren't always, and the heath collects anything loose. The endorsements on the club's homepage are not the usual anonymous puffery — DJ Russell calls it an enjoyable challenge for all abilities, and Lara Tennant, the 2024 Scottish Senior Women's Open champion, played it and called the course impeccable.

For visitors the practical pitch is hard to argue with: ten minutes from Glasgow Airport, a modern clubhouse, a practice range and short-game area, and a green fee of £30–£45 depending on season and time of day — weekday mornings at the top of the range in high summer, afternoons cheaper, Sundays available. That is airport-convenience golf at a members'-club standard of upkeep, and a smarter first or last round of a Scottish trip than fighting traffic into Ayrshire.
