Nine holes on Loch Gairloch. Torridon mountains behind; Skye visible on the horizon.

From the Notebook

Gairloch Golf Club occupies nine holes on the south shore of Loch Gairloch in Wester Ross, at one of the most visually remarkable sites of any golf course in Scotland. Founded 1898 during the era of Victorian Highland tourism, the course sits on a strip of links-influenced ground between the road and the loch, with the Torridon mountains on the eastern horizon and the Skye Cuillin visible over the water to the north-west on clear days.

Nine holes, par 33, around 2,300 yards. The course plays along the lochside and up into slightly higher moorland terrain behind the village before returning to the water. Several greens are positioned to give the golfer a view across the loch. The golf itself is modest by any standard; the setting is not modest at all. This is one of the courses that appears in lists of Scotland's most scenic nine-hole layouts — typically without any claim about the difficulty of the holes, because the scenery renders the question irrelevant.

Green fee is £15–20. The village of Gairloch is on the North Coast 500 route. The RSPB reserve at Beinn Eighe, Inverewe Garden (a remarkable Victorian tropical garden sustained by the Gulf Stream), and the seal colony near the harbour are all within a short drive. For golfers on the NC500 who want a round that matches the landscape of the journey, Gairloch is the natural stop.

Plan This Round

Three things to sort before you tee off.

Played here? Consider

Three things worth packing.

Course-tuned recommendations, not generic gear lists.

Outerwear

Galvin Green Andres jacket

Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.

Layer

Sunderland of Scotland half-zip

Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.

Tech

Garmin Approach S70 GPS

Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.

Frequently Asked

Visitors usually want to know.

Can visitors play at weekends?
Visitors are welcome but mid-week is markedly easier and quieter. Confirm a weekend tee time as far ahead as you can — popular Saturdays book up first.
How early can I book a tee time?
Phone or email the pro shop to confirm. Most Scottish clubs accept visitor bookings 7–30 days ahead; group bookings of 8+ can be arranged further ahead.
Is there a dress code?
Smart casual, collared shirts. Soft only.
Are buggies allowed?
Buggies are not generally available — the course is walked. Hire a trolley at the pro shop if you'd rather not carry.
What's the best time of year to play?
May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep for full conditions. Late May and early Sep are quietest with fair value. Apr–Oct (winter closures common).
