Young 9-hole course (established 1998) on the shore of Loch Broom, with the river, the loch and the beach all in play. On the NC500.

From the Notebook

Ullapool's is one of Scotland's youngest courses — established in 1998, which surprises visitors who assume every Highland town has had its nine holes since Victoria. The course runs along the mouth of the Ullapool River where it meets Loch Broom, and all three of the local geography's big features get into the game: river, loch and beach are live hazards, and the hole names — An Teallach, Loch Broom, Summer Isles — read like the view from each tee. Two loops make a par 70 of around 5,400 yards, the front nine playing 2,699 yards at par 35.

It is a walk-on course in the proper sense: £40 buys the day, juniors pay £25, and if nobody is in the clubhouse café you pay by QR code or drop cash in the honesty box. The club's reciprocal arrangement gives its members access to twenty-six other Highland courses, which says something about how the far north's clubs survive — cooperatively.

For NC500 drivers it is the natural overnight stop between Gairloch's nine and the Durness headland, in a town with actual restaurants and the ferry to Stornoway. Pack the clubs; the day ticket means an evening loop after dinner costs nothing extra.

Plan This Round

Three things to sort before you tee off.

Played here? Consider

Three things worth packing.

Picked for links rounds on the Scottish coast.

Outerwear

Galvin Green Andres jacket

Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.

Layer

Sunderland of Scotland half-zip

Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.

Tech

Garmin Approach S70 GPS

Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.

Frequently Asked

Visitors usually want to know.

Can visitors play at weekends?
Visitors are welcome but mid-week is markedly easier and quieter. Confirm a weekend tee time as far ahead as you can — popular Saturdays book up first.
How early can I book a tee time?
Phone or email the pro shop to confirm. Most Scottish clubs accept visitor bookings 7–30 days ahead; group bookings of 8+ can be arranged further ahead.
Is there a dress code?
Smart casual, collared shirts. Soft only.
Are buggies allowed?
Yes, available at the pro shop. Most members walk with a trolley though — the course is genuinely walkable.
What's the best time of year to play?
May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep for full conditions. Late May and early Sep are quietest with fair value. Year-round, best Apr–Oct.

The Sunday Post

A good round, a fair fee, and a story from the clubhouse.

One email, most Sundays. No affiliate spam, no drip funnel, no nonsense. Just the tee time we'd book this week, the muni we'd play before work, and one piece of Scottish golf history worth the read.
