Plate III — Heathland course — heather-framed, sandy subsoil
Heathland on the Black Isle peninsula. Budget round between Inverness and Dingwall.
Muir of Ord Golf Club is a heathland course on the Black Isle peninsula, 12 miles north of Inverness on the road to Dingwall and the Cromarty Firth. Founded 1875, it is one of the older clubs in the Highlands, established when Muir of Ord was a significant junction town on the early Highland railway network.
Par 67, around 5,600 yards. The course is a compact heathland on the gorse and heather ground above the Black Isle agricultural land — shorter and less severe than the neighbouring Fortrose and Rosemarkie course across the peninsula, but with its own character and the budget green fee that reflects a community club serving local golfers.
Green fee is £40–£45 (2026). For visitors based in Inverness who want a round without committing to the Fortrose or Tain drives, Muir of Ord provides a 20-minute alternative. For those doing the full Black Isle loop — Fortrose in the morning, Muir of Ord in the afternoon — it provides a contrasting second course at a price that makes the two-round day very affordable.

Outerwear
Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.
Layer
Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.
Tech
Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.
