From the Notebook
Musselburgh has three golf names and this is the one people mix up. Musselburgh Old Links is the nine-hole course inside the racecourse where six Opens were played; Royal Musselburgh is the 1774 club that left for Prestongrange. Musselburgh Golf Club is neither. It plays at Monktonhall on the south side of the town, on an 18-hole course James Braid built in the late 1930s to put Musselburgh back on the golfing map after the Opens left the old links.
Braid opened it himself on 10 May 1938 with a four-ball alongside Percy Alliss, Henry Cotton and Alf Padgham, and the club still has the balls they played that day. The layout is largely unchanged since: 6,728 yards off the whites and 6,840 off the blacks, par 71, with a course rating of 72.4 and a slope of 131. It is long, wide and tree-lined — the club counts some 5,000 trees — with Braid's cross-bunkering and doglegs at the 5th and 10th. It has hosted Open Championship qualifying more than once, which says more about the length than the parkland setting does.
In season it is priced like the East Lothian courses it sits beside: £110 midweek, £135 at the weekend. The two rates worth knowing are the twilight round after 2pm (£60 midweek) and the winter round, which falls to £30. Members of another Association of James Braid Courses club get a reduced fee, so bring your card if you have one. It is 20 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh, with a free car park big enough for a coach.
