A Journal for the Thrifty Gowfer
Highlands
Dornoch Firth, Sutherland
Plate I — Links course — coastal exposure, firm running turf
Donald Steel links of 1994 on the Skibo Castle estate, reimagined by Tom Mackenzie in 2003. Members and their guests only.
Andrew Carnegie bought the Skibo estate in 1898 and called it Heaven on Earth; the modern Carnegie Club trades carefully on that line, and the golf is part of the furniture rather than the business. The Carnegie Links was commissioned by Peter de Savary and designed by Donald Steel, opening in 1994 on a compact peninsula encircled on three sides by Loch Evelix and the Dornoch Firth — 6,903 yards of duneland ten minutes from Royal Dornoch, which almost nobody gets to compare directly.
Tom Mackenzie, who had assisted Steel on the original, was brought back in 2003 to reimagine the links, and a televised Shell's Wonderful World of Golf match between Greg Norman and Fred Couples in the mid-1990s remains its most public moment. That is rather the point: there are no tee times because members play freely, no green fee because there are no visitors, and at the time of writing the club is fully subscribed — new applications join a waitlist.
For the travelling golfer the practical note is short: you cannot book this one. Play Royal Dornoch, look south across the firth, and know it's there.

Played here? Consider
Picked for links rounds on the Scottish coast.
Outerwear
Wind off the firth changes club selection two irons. A breathable, fully-waterproof shell that's light enough not to swing in is the single biggest upgrade for Scottish links golf.
Layer
Scottish-made merino — the locals' choice for shoulder-season rounds. Warm enough for a 7am tee time in October, light enough for the back nine when the sun comes out.
Tech
Handles blind tee shots and exposed-coastal yardage cleanly. Battery lasts a 36-hole day; the wind-direction overlay justifies the price on its own.
